Find your next crewmember at Homes for Iowa

Homes for Iowa trains incarcerated men in the building trades while constructing single family homes, and the homes are sold to pay for the training.

Iowa's contractors need trained, skilled workers. Homes for Iowa trains around 50 men year round at the homebuilding site outside of Newton, IA.

Men are exposed to all aspects of the homebuilding process, and eventually some specialize in a trade. Classroom training provided by DMACC covers NCCER Construction Craft Laborer 1 curriculum, OSHA 10 for construction, and special certifications, like rigging, when available.

Crew members are instructed in workplace safety, fall protection, working around heavy machinery, power tools, jobsite math, hand tools, and some are trained in heavy equipment.

Around 30 men are released from the program annually. Iowa contractors wishing to know more, interview a crew member, or hire a crew member can contact Jerry Manning at the building site: jerry.manning@iowa.gov
